Colin Powell, the first Black Secretary of State, passed away this morning. He was 84. General Powell served as the 65th U.S. Secretary of State from 2001-2005, and his successor Condolezza Rice, were the highest-ranking Black Americans in the history of the federal executive branch. General Powell served as the 16th U.S. National Security Advisor from 1987-1989 and as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989-1993. His term was highly controversial due to his inaccurate justification for America's invasion of Iraq in 2003. He was forced to resign in 2004 after Bush's reelection.
